Above and Beyond Report Fall 2018

Another semester gone by just like that!

This semester is, hands down, the hardest I’ve ever worked for my job. This semester I basically worked 3 jobs (AT, marketing and standard desk and DMC shifts) at once with a total of 21 hours a week. I feel that I have gone well above the expectations by doing my best to meet the hours set out for me. I have created and edited plenty AT posters and done stock photography not just for the areas needed but also places that might not be seen as much such as the 3rd floor of the library, the science building, IIC and such, to try to round out the photos available. I have worked to ensure that every client in the library feels welcome and that their problems are handled with care. I have worked to ensure that students with different abilities are given the same resources as any other student (i.e. when I helped the blind student around the library by holding his hand and guiding him to the printers), I have helped people edit their papers and stayed up to an hour past work to help a client with a mental impairment edit his English paper. I have tried my best to help my fellow employee by taking shifts for them during emergencies even if it is inconvenient for me (i.e when an employee had a family emergency and I was at home and they needed a shift covered in 20 minutes so I ran to the library to get there on time)

I have had a really tough semester both personally and in school so I think I did a pretty good job 🙂

Here’s to another great semester!

Duplicate this card, remove yourself from the master card, and assign the new card that you created to yourself.

Using the attached tutorial as a guide, combine two subjects into a third photo which will be a poster ad for anything Commons related that you would to promote. Use a photo of someone who works at the Commons. Post all the original photos along with your finished composite photo to your own trello card.

Question:

If you work for any type of retail or wholesale company, you will need to be able to make flyers to advertise sales. Your challenge is to create a fictitious multi-page booklet flyer for an imaginary company. There will be 4 pages on 1 physical page.

Here are your requirements:
•It should be one 11×17 page total: this is so you can fold it into four pages when you are done.
•You are permitted to use pre-existing photos of products for this challenge since, in a professional setting, you will be provided them.
•Your flyer must include a business name, your products, somewhere listing the store hours and address, and when the sale applies to.

CS W10 CHALLENGE
Create a challenge that showcases a software/tool/function/etc. that you find useful and would like to pass on to others! Your challenge should include a concise tutorial of how to complete the challenge, along with what the goal of the challenge is. The tutorial should not be a general “guide” but rather tailored to the specific area you are focusing on. The tutorial should be created by you, and not copied directly from other material online (you are free to use any other tutorials as reference, just do not copy-paste them). Challenges should be able to be completed in about an hour.

Possible topic areas include:
– Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, or Publisher)
– Linux (Terminal commands, Linux specific software, Utilising a Linux OS)
– AT Software (Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Read and Write Gold, Inspiration)
– Programming (Scripting, web programming, language concepts)
– Any other area you’d like to focus on (See me for approval first!)

This one is a bit more open ended than our usual challenges, and as such, if you’re questioning your idea, please don’t hesitate to talk through it with me first, rather than finish it only for it to not meet the requirements.

Question:

This challenge comes from Jacob House! This one is a bit more open ended than usual. Using one of the tools Jacob mentions in the challenge document (or any other alternative, draw.io is another online, easy to use chart tool that I recommend) complete a flowchart showing steps to complete some work related task/fix some work problem (it does not have to necessarily be a LabNet issue as outlined in the document, it can be a flow chart for any work related task such as completing the rounds, helping a client with email set up, troubleshooting a faulty monitor, helping with excel formulas, etc.) I’d like these flowcharts to be as accurate as possible, so if in doubt please consult the documentation on Bitrix or ask a supervisor for clarification before submitting. This challenge is more about the troubleshooting process, so accuracy is crucial.
