Work Diaries Fall 2017 Week 7 – Customer Service

We are always preaching the importance of “owning the problem”, and during training I always say that this job is less about knowing the answers, and more about effectively finding the answers. Describe a time when you really took ownership of something for a client. How did your thoroughness help prevent further work for them?

The deadline for points is Tuesday, November 7, at 10AM.

My response:

I had a client who was updating her resume and had somehow added a blank page at the end of her document, that she couldn’t remove. I took a look at her document and tried to find hidden symbols on the blank page that was preventing her from deleting it. Turns out there was a paragraph symbol. However, I couldn’t delete the symbol. I told her I will look this up and get back to her. After doing a bit of research, I narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities. The simplest of these possibilities was that she had a table at the end of the page preceding the unwanted blank page. Word automatically inserts a paragraph following a table. One trick to solve this is to select the paragraph symbol, and instead of deleting it, reduce the font size. I went back to her and applied this solution and it worked. She thanked me for getting back to her, and I felt good about learning yet another trick on MS Word.
