Hey Gang,
This weeks examples of health promotion campaigns were a good change from the readings. I enjoyed watching the videos (although the URL didn’t work initially, but I found the site).
Bell has done an amazing job with the mental health initiative. This mental health campaign has been the most effective campaign over the past 7 years in Canada. Bell has done an amazing job raising money for mental health awareness, by utilizing the hashtag #BellLetsTalk, on “Bell Let’s Talk Day”, Bell donates 5 cents to mental health awareness for every time the hashtag is used. Over 7 million dollars was raised last year, 1.9 million of it going to children and youth grants, 469k going to aboriginal communities and 1 million in military family support. Bell’s total donation to mental health programs now stands at $86,504,429.05. The mental health campaign lets everyone know that “you are not alone”, when it comes to seeking help or asking questions regarding mental health. Many people suffer from mental health issues and as a jr high teacher and youth worker, i’ve dealt first hand with students who are suffering. One of my best friends brothers took his life 4 years ago, he suffered from mental health issues but no one knew- until it was too late. Below are two artifacts that I think are great and relate to the topic.
Artifact #1- This is a youtube video that was created by Cape Breton University Athletic Department. This video has student athletes and coaches discussing mental health for Bell Let’s Talk Day. CBU is my alma mater, so I know a few of the participants in the video. The video is very well done.

Artifact #2- This is a tweet from our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Bell Let’s Talk Day. It is nice to see our leader being involved in such a great cause.

One health promotion campaign that sticks out in my mind, is “Body Break”. Hal Johnson and Joanne Macleod had many commercials on cable TV that promoted health and exercise. Each commercial encouraged the viewer to do a particular exercise intern encouraging people to “Keep Fit and Having Fun”. Body Break has been around for 25 years and still going strong promoting health and wellness.
Below is the website for Body Break, as well as a vintage commercial featuring Hal Johnson and Joanne Macleod.
