This weeks reading was a nice change. The reading was straight forward and broke down the 6 steps to developing a health promotion program. I found it very informative as prep for my background and final project.
The 6 steps discussed by PHO are:
Step 1: Manage the planning process
Step 2: Conduct a situational assessment
Step 3: Set goals, audiences and outcome objectives
Step 4: Choose strategies, activities and assign resources
Step 5: Develop indicators
Step 6: Review the plan
I think all steps are very important when developing a health promotion program. I particularly think that proper management of the plan (Step 1) is crucial for success. Overseeing people’s roles and making sure jobs are getting done is imperative in any job/project. Having the proper people in place to make the project run properly, is in my opinion the most important step. All the steps flow together nicely but overseeing the project is key. All steps are crucial to run a successful program but constantly reviewing the plan (Step 6) is very important. Constantly reflecting and evaluating the progress of the program is key. Making changes to suit the needs of the individuals involved as well as constantly keeping communication open to new ideas is another key factor. Steps 1 and 6 are what I feel need to be above and beyond the strongest aspects of creating a successful project.
Below is a video I found when researching successful health promotion plans. Dr. Elaine Johannes uses a house as a visual aid to help one understand how to build a successful plan.
