Hello there!
I am Emily Dunsmore, orchestral musician, teacher in training and advocate for education and arts education for all! I have recently relocated to beautiful Newfoundland to attend Memorial University and pursue studies to become a teacher at the Primary and Elementary level.
I come to St. John’s after a great deal of travel across North America. I am also an orchestral musician, I play the french horn and years of pursuit of performing as a career has allowed me to travel in both the United States and across Canada as well as be part of numerous musical endeavours including Broadway Musicals, Opera productions and seasons with professional orchestras. Music has allowed me to meet many amazing people and have life changing experiences. I am proud to be the Principal Horn of the Newfoundland Symphony.
My love of education came later for me after having been a musical coach with summer programs in Chicago, IL and also working with the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra brass section. I realized that what I love about music is communication, community, discipline, expression and the development of a voice that it cultivates. I realized that this love is transferable to having a greater affect on children at a young age, when they are most impressionable. I realized that I want to be the teacher I needed when I was younger. I want to be the role model that I had in many arenas of my life when I was younger. I want to make a positive impact to the growth, learning and life experiences of children and cultivate a sense of curiosity, questioning and wonder that will set them up to become active citizens in their communities. These desires led me to teaching, and I am happy to say that I have found a great deal of happiness in my pursuit of teaching as a new career.
The positive affect my musical training had on me throughout my youth and continues to have on me makes me a huge advocate for early exposure to music and experience contributing to the arts. I believe that experiences in the arts add to all aspects of learning in unique ways, teaching discipline, expression, task-persistance and fun!
