This semester has been a roller coaster, I have taken the initiative to improve my designing and coding skills. I worked on designing a few tutorials in the Makerspace, and create the Christmas tree ornaments. While staying on track of assignments midterms and projects, I worked on my smart goals : This semester I want to achieve how to improve my skills in programming, and my goal is to complete a full stack developer course before the end of the semester. This course, will give me better understanding and experience to design websites from the front-end and back-end. I will try to achieve it by working on it a few hours per week, minimum 3 hours. As this course has 30 hours of video tutorials, and 172 lectures. I will be able to track the process via udemy course timeline, I will get a certificate at the end of this course.
This semester I went above and beyond working on Makerspace, took my time to learn how the 3D printers work, assisted clients one on one and teaching them how to use fusion 360 o create a 3D object. This was a challenge for me as every client had a different requirement, and some wanted multiple things, so to work with them step by step helped me compartmentalize and organize the clients lists and making sure they left the maker space with the satisfaction of the job. I also tried to use this method at my DMC and Desk shifts, there has been a great change in my way of answering clients. The security seminar gave me a better understanding of things. I was able to pick out issues and help clients faster, while still giving them the time to explain the issues and was thinking ahead on solutions as the clients explained. This process helped me find a solution quickly and tried to assist the client best way as I could.
I also took the initiative to go on a stapler hunt, towards the end of my shifts tidy the desk up, and make sure the person taking over my role had enough supplies to last their shift. I mostly spend most of my time doing long and critical rounds. Making sure all systems were running fine. Also sometimes I would already be at the back halls assisting clients so I would always have the rounds card on me to make it easier. Filling the printers became a regular stop during my rounds, and always kept an eye out for the insert paper sign. As most computers printing settings didn’t change after a client logged off or the document is in legal size and client wants it in letter. This creates a issue as clients just press print without seeing the settings. This would halt the other print jobs making it harder for all the clients. This is a task we always have to be on our toes for. After noticing these tiny situations I am able to help clients better, and reducing stalls in the printers.
I wasn’t able to work on my side project which was to design the plotter calculator, however I will continue to work on it as soon as I get some free time, either during the shifts or during the semester break.
This semester I have been able to manage and organize all my course requirements and tried to stay on track of the weekly commons challenges. I will try to continue this pattern next semester as well, as it is helpful and allows me to think clearly and improve my designing skills.
